Was Jingle Bells originally made for Christmas?

It was written in 1850 because of sleigh races a small town in Massachusetts used to have.

Was Jingle Bells originally made for Christmas?
NO. It's a winter song about the sleigh races held on the main street of a small New England town (which name escapes me) in New Hampshire during the 19th Century. It has no reference to Xmas at all.

Reply:It was originally written as a Thanksgiving song in 1857 by James Pierpont . So I guess it was originally not. It's a moot point as to whether it's a Christmas song. The Thankgiving parade has Santa in it... But I'm not American so i don't know the in's-%26amp;-out's of Autumn. Certainly in Britain Jingle Bells is a Christmas song.
