What is the significance of bells at Christmas?

ie. jingle bells

What is the significance of bells at Christmas?
To remind you to put a little money in the kettle.
Reply:Without knowing more, I would suggest that bells were another tradition of the winter solstice celebrations that had been around since hundreds (thousands?) of years before the time of christ. It's clear the christianity adopted the winter existing winter solstice celebrations that already existed, because the people would not have celebrated without their regular take on the event. Decorated trees, candles, singing and many other ways that christmas is currently celebrated were clearly "pagan," but could not be avoided by the church;
Reply:Jingle bells were put on horses to jingle as they trotted, making a rider have a more enjoyable time. That's it for jingle bells.

Church bells were often rung for any feast, joyous occasion, or as a warning.
Reply:the celebration of Jesus being born
Reply:Good question. I never really gave it much thought. Perhaps I will google it and see what the significance of bells are.
Reply:a Warning to look out!
Reply:Depends on who you talk to.

For Christians it's making joyous noise for the lord.

To the North Eurpean pagans it was to keep the spirits at bay.
Reply:I think that it's about the church bells ringing out the joyous news of Jesus' birth.
Reply:I think the bells may have had a more practical side then some realize.

They would help keep both horses and riders alert on the long journeys as well make the ride more pleasurable.
